How to Fix “Windows Update Service Missing” in Services.msc (2026)

If the Windows Update service has completely disappeared from your services list, your system cannot stay secure.

1. Run SFC and DISM: Open CMD as Admin and type sfc /scannow then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
2. Registry Fix: Often a malware attack deletes the registry keys. You can manually restore the wuauserv key from a working PC or use a System Repair Tool to reset system defaults.
3. Manual Reset: Use the Media Creation Tool to perform an “In-place upgrade” which restores missing services without deleting files.
